Letter from my grandmother, on the farm at Bloomington, Kans., to my father, a
college sophomore at Southwestern College, Winfield, Kans., Thursday, December 10, 1942. On December 1, the government
had put in place gasoline rationing, a ban on pleasure driving, and a
nationwide 35-mile-an-hour speed limit. (On
