Mon, Sep 6, 1943: girls and sailors

"Girls by the score have begun to arrive for college, which begins with registration on Tuesday.  The Navy is even to be excused from classes (except Physical Education) Tuesday morning so our instructors can assist in the enrollment procedure.  The sailors went to school all by themselves during August, so the arrival of some civilians should stimulate things around here.  All students enrolling for the 6-week term, lasting until Oct. 22, seem to be girls with the exception of a few 4-F men.  Then on November 1 the girls and sailors will be put in the same classes."
-- Letter from my father, Cape Girardeau, Mo., to his family, Bloomington, Kans., Monday, September 6, 1943.  My father was in the Navy V-12 program at Southeast Missouri State Teachers College, which involved taking regular college classes, while waiting to be placed in officer candidate school.
